The total annual production of plastic waste in Europe reached approximately 29 million tonnes in 2018. Plastic waste is a valuable raw material, because it is made from fossil resources and consists of long chains of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen.
If plastic waste is separated into individual types of plastic, such as PE, PP and PA, shredded into particles the size of rice grains and entered into the plasmalysis process, elemental carbon is produced, as well as a gas phase, in which two species dominate, depending on the temperature: methane and hydrogen. By adding nitrogen as a carrier gas, all higher molecular weight hydrocarbon compounds are split into hydrogen and carbon.
The hydrogen can be used directly for CO2-free generation of heat and electricity in hydrogen CHPs or fuel cells. Solid carbon can be used as an industrial raw material, for example, for the production of steel, carbon fibres and other carbon-based structures and materials.
